Lockerby Legion Branch 564

Our Story
In the Spring of 1957, Lockerby Legion, Branch 564, Sudbury Ontario, held the first meeting in the recreation room of a private home with twenty two prospective members in attendance.

In a short time Veterans in the area decided to join. A Charter was granted to Branch 564. At this time there were twenty two Charter Members and seventeen Founding Members. For a short time the meetings were held at a Club House on Walford Road.

As membership grew, this also was soon too small. The next premises was at Plaza 69 Shopping Mall. This was much larger and more suitable for Meetings and Social Functions and served the purpose for the next five years.

By the year 1965, the membership had increased so much, a larger Hall was needed. Branch 564 then moved to Manitou Airways on Sunnyside Road. Unfortunately in 1969, fire destroyed these premises and Branch 564 lost everything, even the Branch Charter was burned. Within a short period of tie, a Charter replacement was received. Our comrades from Branch 76 were very generous and provided facilities and our meetings went on uninterrupted.

By now the Members were getting frustrated from moving around so much and they decided to form a building committee. Suitable land was found and purchased by the generosity of the Ladies Auxiliary and Branch Members. Construction was started in the summer of 1970 and by the late Fall completed. The burning of the mortgage took place in 1976. In 1991 an addition was built which included a new kitchen, and a Board Room. Later a washroom for the handicapped was added.

Lockerby Branch 564 of the Royal Canadian Legion is located at 2200 Long Lake, Road, Sudbury, Ontario.
